Patna,(Bihartimes) Aug 3: In a significant political development, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has secured a decisive victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of 18,963 votes. The result marks a major upset, ending the BJP’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
As per the Election Commission data, after the completion of all 31 rounds of counting, Kishor polled 63,203 votes, while Neeraj Kumar Sinha received 44,250 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Kumari Gupta finished a distant third with 14,085 votes.
This win is particularly noteworthy as it marks Prashant Kishor’s first-ever electoral victory, positioning him and his party, Jan Suraaj, as a serious emerging force in Bihar politics.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated Kishor on his win. In a post on X, he acknowledged the people’s mandate, stating that the voters of Bankipur had made their choice in the “great festival of democracy,” and extended his best wishes to the Jan Suraaj leader.
Kishor maintained a steady lead from the early rounds of counting and continued to widen the gap throughout the process. What was initially expected to be a closely fought triangular contest between Jan Suraaj, BJP, and RJD eventually turned into a comfortable victory for Kishor.
As the counting progressed, it became evident that the real contest was for the second position. While the BJP managed to retain the runner-up spot, the RJD lagged significantly behind in third place.
The outcome has taken many political observers by surprise, especially given Bankipur’s reputation as a BJP stronghold. In the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, BJP leader Nitin Nabin had won the seat with a margin of nearly 51,000 votes against the RJD. However, that advantage did not translate into the by-election.
The BJP’s loss of a traditionally secure seat is likely to trigger internal review, while the RJD’s poor showing raises further questions about its performance in urban constituencies.
Analysts suggest that Kishor may have successfully drawn support from voters across traditional party lines, cutting into both BJP and RJD vote bases. A clearer understanding of the voting shift is expected once detailed booth-wise data is analyzed.
For Prashant Kishor and Jan Suraaj, the Bankipur by-election victory represents a major breakthrough, firmly establishing the party as a new and influential player in Bihar’s political landscape.
